Strangers in the Day

One of the most underrated cheap date spots in the city, the National Gallery of Art is a bona fide treasure. Art novices and enthusiasts alike would be well-advised to start off in the West Building and make an afternoon of marveling at masterworks from around the world, ranging from the Pre-Renaissance madonna-and-child craze to the 20th cubist revolution. There's plenty to see, plenty to react to, plenty to admit you don't know how to react to, and plenty of space to talk, laugh, and get to know each other without disrupting other visitors or hemorrhaging cash. For a real treat, swing through the Chester Dale collection on the lower level. Nothing keeps an art scene vibrant like filthy rich patrons an their very bored wives. Mr. & Mrs. Dale did more than their fair share securing masterpieces from the turn of the 19th Century for posterity and it's a waste not to partake. Besides, you always seem cooler wandering through the basements of museums; looks like you "know people".
