Those on the hunt for art in Washington, DC will be in heaven on earth, unless that little thing called The Smithsonian Institution just doesn’t do it for you.
There are, in fact, nineteen Smithsonian-run museums in the District, featuring world class art, exhibits, and specimens that range from NASA shuttles to stunning sculptures. Experiencing all of them in a day would be impossible, let alone experiencing all the other non-Smithsonian-related art galleries and independent museums in this town, so some kind of schedule is going to have be drawn up between all your partying. From the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum to the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden to the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, the nation’s capital is awash in amazing art to see.
One could argue that the city’s stunning architecture is as amazing a form of art as you’ll find in any museum, so as you walk through town you can marvel at all the historic buildings.
There are also lots of unique local art galleries worth checking out. Dupont Circle is a great spot to do that, especially on the first Friday of each month, when galleries in Dupont – mostly down R Street and Connecticut Avenue – are open late for the monthly gallery walk.
No matter what you’re in the mood for, Washington, DC manages to pack a wide array of great art within its boundaries.
