The National Christmas Tree Lighting Description

The National Christmas Tree Lighting - Concert | Holiday Event | Show in Washington, DC.

The National Christmas Tree Lighting is an annual holiday ceremony held in early December on the Ellipse in Washington, DC. Located just south of the White House fence, the Ellipse is a 52-acre park offering a 17,000 person capacity for the National Christmas Tree Lighting.

Dating back to 1923, the 40-foot tall Blue Spruce tree on the Ellipse has been decorated and illuminated in the holiday spirit as a sign of the beginning of the season and also a message of peace to the nation and the world. Throughout the years, additions to the ceremony have been added such as the Christmas Pathway of Peace that consists of the National Christmas Tree and then 56 smaller trees representing the states and territories of the United States. Along with the tree lightings, the National Christmas Tree Lighting also features musical performances by nationally and internationally renowned artists, the United States military band, and an address from the President on the holiday season and the message of peace it represents.

The National Christmas Tree Lighting has a limited capacity and it is therefore a ticketed event, however, the tickets are free and given away in an online lottery to 17,000 lucky people. Entries for the lottery open in October of that year.
