My Take: Located on the quieter area of Georgetown’s Wisconsin Street, Pâtisserie Poupon is the perfect place to get a quick treat while shopping or exploring the preppiest part of Washington, DC. Heading over to the DC location on a Sunday morning (there is also a store in Baltimore), I expected the café to be extremely crowded, but it actually turned out to be a great escape from the two hour waits at restaurants on M Street. Poupon has every sort of pastry imaginable, each one looking more delectable than the next. The Scene: Being that the patisserie is in Georgetown, it is a stop for many tourists, so except to hear many different languages will dining at the café. It also has many regular customers who stop by for a quick cup of coffee or a fresh croissant. The crowd varies, from a young girl with her mother after soccer practice to coworkers discussing their upcoming weeks in the office, since there is something for everyone at Pâtisserie Poupon. Cocktails & Cuisine: When entering the café, one sees a long glass case full of every type of detectable treat imaginable. Dozens of beautiful macaroons, mouth-watering croissants, and perfectly crafted cakes catch ones eye as they walk in. Poupon also has a wide variety of sandwiches, omlettes, and salads, perfect for those who are indecisive about breakfast or lunch at 11:30. In the back of the café, there is a coffee bar in the back with two baristas making any drink you could possibly ask for. Prices: Pâtisserie Poupon is moderately priced; it’s not ideal for the college student on a budget, but most of the items on the menu are small so the total price will not amount to much. The food and coffee is more than worth the slight splurge! What to Wear: Being that Pâtisserie Poupon is in Georgetown, the general style is relatively preppy. Colored pants and button downs are popular choices for both men and women. That being said, the café is extremely informal so wear whatever you are most comfortable with. Insider Info/When to go: Seating can be difficult to find, especially on the weekend so if you’re planning to sit and relax at Pâtisserie Poupon, I’d suggest going during the weekday when most of the tourists are at bay. But if you’re in the mood for some great French food, don’t hesitate to head over to the café; they are extremely friendly and their food is more than worth the slight crowding.
