The line of text in L2 Lounge’s membership application is clear: “There are no free memberships. It doesn't matter who you are or who you think you know.” Such is the great equalizer of this ultra-modern Georgetown lounge, which caters to its members first and anyone willing to pay a $20–$30 cover charge second – but only if there's room inside.
Well-to-do registrants and their dapper guests make their way down an unassuming alley and into a posh subterranean hideout, with exposed brick and rustic stone contrasted by elegant banquettes, low chaises, and rows of sleek metal stools.
The main room features a long polished bar dotted with jars containing the fruits and herbs used in the venue’s signature cocktails, as well as projectors that cast movies and visual effects on the walls.
Tranquil international techno beats don’t prevent the sophisticated crowd of jet-setters and diplomats from mingling, while couples and groups of fashionable socialites retreat into four interconnected alcoves for an even more intimate setting.
In the nearest nook, square ivory couches entice chic politicos to relax beneath a neon light show, or to join modish ladies on one of the tall translucent chairs by the second smaller bar.
A large curved sofa fills another alcove, as do candlelit tables where hungry patrons snack on intricate small plates.
Although Wednesdays provide a cover-free chance for non-members to enjoy its exclusive atmosphere, L2 Lounge is always a refined den for swanky drinks and swankier people.
Successful young professionals, international jet-setters, socialites, fashionistas, diplomats, and older business types, late 20s to 40s+.
International and local DJs play an eclectic mix ranging from techno to Latin beats. Six overhead projectors play movies or visual effects.
Savory hors d’oeuvres including croque monsieur, tarte flambé, and organic beef sirloin mini-burgers. Menu available until approximately 1am.
Members always welcome; non-members allowed in only when venue is not at capacity. Member benefits include waived event fees, waived door charges, no table minimums, no waiting in line, and up to five guests free per night.
Venue hosts quarterly member appreciation cocktail parties for members and up to ten guests.
Cover charge (non-members only) $20–$30. Hors d’oeuvres $8–$15. Beer $7–$10, wine $8–$18/glass or $150–$300/bottle, cocktails $13–$18, bottle service $59–$429.
Membership $6500/Corporate, $1000/National, $1500/$2000/Prestige (one or two years). Valet $20.
Dress to impress: designer suits, button-downs, high-end cocktail dresses. Dress code: no shorts, sneakers, or flip-flops.
Fridays and Saturdays for the liveliest crowds and music, and Wednesdays for a cover-free evening for non-members and special menu discounts.
Citronelle (3000 M Street NW) offers award-winning, innovative French cuisine in elegant surroundings.
