Washington, DC Summer Solstice Overview

Celebrated centuries ago by the Egyptians as the beginning of the Nile River’s flooding season, the Summer Solstice marks the official start of the year’s warmest season. Every June, residents of Washington, D.C. excitedly head outdoors to kick off the year’s longest day with an abundance of activities.

One seasonal celebration is the Solar Foundation Summer Solstice Party 2018, where partygoers watch the sun set from an extraordinary rooftop with a panoramic view of downtown. This “yellow tie" Summer Solstice event provides lively music, games, and food to celebrate the start of summer, and proceeds support the foundation’s research in solar initiatives around the world.

Theater lovers flock to Source Festival 2018 to watch rising talents and established artists present 25 original works throughout June. Innovative actors, playwrights, and producers put on more than a dozen 10-minute plays, three full-length plays, and a talent show featuring the general public.

Down south, Crystal Screen 2018 offers a free outdoor film series every Monday. The gorgeous courtyard serves as a refreshing outdoor theater for watching movies such as The Social Network, Forrest Gump, Jaws, and Inception. There is no better place to enjoy an evening under the stars with family and friends.

Come June 21, Washington, D.C., offers a diverse variety of Summer Solstice events that can’t be missed.
