Matisyahu is an iconic star of modern reggae. The singer blends hip-hop, jazz scat, and traditional hazzan to make unique dance music with reggae roots and Jewish themes. Born as Matthew Paul Miller in 1979, Matisyahu has sold millions of albums and topped music charts worldwide.
At 19, Miller joined the Lubavitch Hasidic movement and adopted the Hebrew form of Matthew, Matisyahu, which means “Gift of God”. Drawing inspiration from a wide variety of sources, from Bob Marley to the Torah, Matisyahu gained fans around the world with his 2005 single, “King Without a Crown”, which reached the Modern Rock Top 10 and soon became a Top 40 hit in the US.
In 2004, Matisyahu signed with JDub Records and released the debut album, Shake Off the Dust…Arise. After securing his standing as a modern reggae legend through multiple tours, Matisyahu teamed up with producer Bill Laswell for Youth in 2006. Youth was ranked #1 on the Billboard Digital Album chart and was certified gold in the US.
After working on new songs, Matisyahu recorded in LA and Tel Aviv before releasing Spark Seeker in 2012. Spark Seeker shot up to #1 on the US Reggae chart and peaked at #3 on the US Independent chart.
Matisyahu has toured with bands like The Dirty Heads and Sublime with Rome and has headlined festivals like Bonnaroo. Even though the singer’s gone beardless, he still churns out chart-topping hits, packing out clubs and arenas with fans ready to bob and sing along to songs like “One Day”.
