Georgetown, Washington, DC –
Formerly a sports bar, Modern is now an upscale club – and one of the first to take root in an area better known for its pubs and taverns. Few jocks remain at this subterranean den, whose intimate size and varying theme nights attract a lively mix of dance-happy patrons.
In the lounge area, plush white ottomans surround a dimly-lit circular bar, where sexy servers fill their trays with Grey Goose and champagne and the shelves around the copper pillar overflow with sparkling liquor bottles.
Perhaps the most obvious example of the club’s “modern” design is the round discs dotting the ceiling, while hanging bubble chairs and rotating colored lights add a bit of retro funk for the diverse crowd to enjoy.
Finely coiffed fashionistas cozy into VIP nooks when they need a break from the hip-hop, Top 20, and house music that kicks off each night, but with ever-changing dress codes to match the theme nights, the clientele can range from track-suited break dancers to bedazzled beauties.
For whoever ends up crowding the wooden dance floor, a second smaller bar just off to the side provides a pit-stop away from the gyrating fray.
A chic club abounding with old-fashioned fun and a multi-faceted mélange of minglers, Modern is a great place to enjoy a bottle of bubbly on an elegant banquette or pop and lock with a bottle of Bud.
Diverse mix of fun-loving Georgetown University students, fashionistas, upscale young professionals, avid break dancers, and clubbers, mid-20s to early 30s.
DJ spins mostly dance-oriented party music, including hip-hop, old-school classics, house, mash-ups, rock, and reggae.
