With its laid-back atmosphere and large patio, Trio’s Fox and Hounds is a quintessential neighborhood haunt popular with easygoing locals. The slightly edgier sister establishment to adjoining Trio’s Restaurant, the Fox is usually full of khaki-clad, sandal-wearing regulars catching up outside as they survey the bustling 17th Street scene.
The rest of the unpretentious crowd indulges in a few well-priced mix-it-yourself rail drinks, which might consist of large glasses of rum plunked down with a bottle of Coke or a vessel of vodka paired with jugs of generic tonic water.
A small bar and three flat-screen TVs inside attract young hipsters and after-work regulars looking to start the night with a double shot or to just chill out with a burger and the game, while businessmen with rolled up sleeves settle in on the leather banquette in the corner nook to unwind with a potent nightcap.
Weekday or weeknight, Trio’s Fox and Hounds has struck a chord with mellow regulars looking for friendly, low-key chatter and a comfortable atmosphere sometimes hard to find in the hustle and bustle of the city.
Mellow and casual Dupont natives, college kids, and young and old professionals, mostly 20s to 40s.
Jukebox with classic rock. Three TVs.
Same menu as Trio’s, including burgers, sandwiches, and appetizers. Happy Hour M–F 4:30–6:30pm.
Brunch menu $6–$10, appetizers $7–$10, entrées $7–$20. Beer $4–$6, wine $6–$10/glass or $23–$40/bottle, cocktails $4–$5.
Anything goes: shorts, t-shirts, sandals, ball caps.
After work on Thursdays and Fridays for a popular way to start the night, and Saturdays and Sundays for a relaxed brunch crowd.
Kramerbooks & Afterwords Café (1517 Connecticut Avenue NW) is a popular combination bookseller and café with the added benefit of frequent live music.
