Party Earth The Wonderland Ballroom Review

The Scene

Nestled in a mostly residential neighborhood, The Wonderland Ballroom is both a popular community gathering spot and a nighttime funhouse for the young and reckless of Columbia Heights.

Nestled in a mostly residential neighborhood, The Wonderland Ballroom is both a popular community gathering spot and a nighttime funhouse for the young and reckless of Columbia Heights. Wood-paneled walls covered with vintage beer ads, street signs, stickers, Buddha statues, and movie posters, however, create a flavor that is far more dive than ballroom.

Anything from the Gorillaz to the Misfits blares out of the jukebox, as a crazy quilt of neighborhood residents from blue-collar types to grunge groups sip Delirium Tremens and three-dollar cans of PBR at the simple wood booths that line the room.

On warm nights and weekend days, the patio gets busy early with young professionals and post-grads, who settle in to gorge themselves on big-ass plates of signature bratwurst and hot dogs, while their always-welcome pooches look on longingly, waiting for scraps.

The venue’s second floor hosts a dance party on Friday and Saturday nights, when live music and DJs spinning dance classics, electro-pop, rock, and timeless chartbusters from the 80s and 90s get the disheveled mass of twenty-something hipsters and partygoers on their feet to let off steam, meet new people, and dance the night away.

A true neighborhood joint perfect for an after-work pint, The Wonderland Ballroom is also an easy destination for anyone looking to get ballroom-blitzed at week’s end.

Tip from Jonah:

Wonderland is notoriously packed on Friday and Saturday nights. Crowds not your thing? Then just consider the fact that nearly a dozen marriages have been sparked by the forced mingling here. Bring that special someone to Wonderland – if they come back, they’ll be yours forever. If they don’t…at least you had a fun night!

  • Crowd

Laid-back young professionals, artists, rowdy college kids looking to get tossed, and chatty older neighborhood regulars, mostly 20s to 30s, though older in early evenings.

  • Entertainment / Music

Jukebox stacked with mostly punk, indie, classic, and 90s rock. DJs and live music. Board games including Connect Four and Risk.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

Bar fare including hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, bratwurst, and vegetarian dishes. Happy Hour M–F 5–8pm.

  • Prices

Brunch menu $7–$10.50, appetizers $4.50–$10, wraps $10, salads and sandwiches $4–$10, burgers and bratwurst $8–$10. Beer $3–$7, wine $6–$7, cocktails $5–$12.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

Casual: jerseys, flat-bill hats, Converse, band t-shirts, flip-flops, cargo shorts, cutoffs, gym shorts.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Weekday nights or weekend days for a true neighborhood bar atmosphere, and Friday and Saturday nights for big crowds.

  • Close By

Meridian Pint (3400 11th Street NW) has a similar neighborhood atmosphere with the added benefit of table-top taps flowing with craft beers.

Hip to be Hip

If the Capitol Dome represents the center of the free world, Wonderland Ballroom represents the center of the DC hipsterverse. There's a surprising amount of conformity in being a nonconformist, but you have to admire the plucky sense of liberated post-suburban pride with which every other lass and gent here seems to don the trademark skinny jeans, horned rimmed glasses and plaid flannel top. After your eyes have adjusted to the uniform aesthetics of the clientele, you'll find a generous helping of cold beer on tap, a happy hour menu to put some good bawdy cheer into even the most upstanding of congressional interns, a rotating calvalcade of live music, comedy, and dancing, and a group of patrons who are an overwhelmingly chill and fun grade of company. When it's time to throw off the workday mojo, throw on some Chuck Taylor's and venture to Kenyon Street for a taste of DC Bohemia. Beards and fedoras optional.
