Whether they’re in the mood for delectable chocolate porters or a smoked bacon lager, patrons pining for the perfect hops will fare well at ChurchKey.
With more than five hundred bottles, fifty drafts, twenty reserved labels, and five casks at the ready, this cozy bar – located above sister restaurant Birch & Barley – packs in unpretentious young professionals who unwind on antique fabric sofas set beneath dimly-lit chandeliers and mounted wooden kegs.
Paisley velvet walls form the backdrop for straight-off-the-hill lobbyist groups who claim the couches and stools in the back lounge, while beer connoisseurs sample four-ounce flights at the rust-orange bar or grab a seat in the mustard yellow booths to nosh on tater tots and mac and cheese sticks.
Tucked away by the front windows, a small table with a view of bustling 14th street gives couples a place to snuggle in for an evening of pale ales and people-watching.
An elegant and intimate bar with one of the most impressive beer selections in the city, ChurchKey is a neighborhood joint where everyone has fun taking beer seriously.
Upscale but unpretentious young professionals, beer connoisseurs, groups of trendy girlfriends, political types, and a hip older crowd, mid-20s to late 40s.
Ambient indie and alternative rock.
Small bites menu including cheese plates, fried nibbles, salads, and flatbreads, all of which can be expertly paired with any of the five hundred-plus beer options.
Appetizers $4.50–$8.50, cheese plates $16–$24, sandwiches and flatbreads $7–$15. Beer $2–$100, wine $9–$15, cocktails $7–$12.
Business attire to trendy: suits, blazers, blouses, designer jeans, sweater vests.
After 5pm during the week for the relaxed but busy post-work scene, and weekends for a long day of great beer and conversation.
Just downstairs is Birch & Barley (1337 14th Street NW), a restaurant featuring the same selection of beer and a menu of food pairings.
