Hammer Museum - Museum in Los Angeles.
Feb 25, 2013 Contemporary & Modern Art "The Hammer museum is a real treat for UCLA students. Besides the Fowler museum on campus, which can be a bit dull, the Hammer is an excellent alternative for art-minded UCLA students. Located the corner of Westwood and Wilshire, the Hammer just looks cool- the severe, blocky stone exterior often has banners showcasing the cool exhibits inside. Last year they had a really awesome exhibit on Robert Crumb's illustrated Book of Genesis. If you didn't get to see the exhibit, I'd definitely recommend checking out Crumb's book- his illustrations can be weird and grotesque, but are eye-catching nonetheless. His treatment of the Bible is definitely irreverent at times, but also a cool contemporary take on a definitively non-contemporary subject matter. Bottom Line: You don't have to be an art major to enjoy the Hammer museum (I'm not!) However if you want a more modern and contemporary art focus, definitely check out LACMA." hide

Feb 25, 2013 Overrated but Still a Good Dessert Place "Diddy Riese is always touted as a highlight of Westwood by campus tour guides and Westwood inhabitants alike. For $1.75, you can get two cookies of your choice and an ice cream filling- a very excellent ice cream sandwich for a good price. The cookies themselves are delectable (I highly recommend the white chocolate macadamia nut) and the ice cream is good too. I always get white chocolate macadamia with coffee ice cream. I've also gotten the snow cones + ice cream (I forget what they're called), but the combination of shaved ice and creamy ice cream is surprisingly refreshing. You won't get any hipster points by saying you like this place, but it's a quality standard dessert place in Westwood. Also, Steve the manager is a swell guy who donates huge amounts of cookies to UCLA on campus organizations. I worked with him last year and he gave Unicamp 4 dozen cookies for one of our fundraisers!" hide

Feb 25, 2013 Swanky Dinner date place "I've been here once with my parents for a celebratory 21st birthday dinner. The place is definitely on a higher level than most Westwood restaurants in terms of quality and decor. I had a steak which was very well cooked- perfect juicy medium rare. The most memorable part though was the service. We had an awesome waiter who, when he realized that I was there as a first time legal consumer of alcohol, brought out all sorts of wines for me to taste. He was very knowledgeable about wines and gave me a run through of what wines to pair with what kinds of foods. We ended up choosing an excellent red to go with my steak. He didn't charge anything for the wine tasting and even brought out a cheesecake for dessert on the house! Bottom line: expensive but definitely high quality. Excellent service (although to be fair, it was my birthday)." hide
