Sake Day Description

Sake Day - Food & Drink Event in San Francisco.

Sake lovers from around the Bay area have the chance to sample award-winning local and Japanese sakes at the annual Sake Day. Since 2005, fans of the potent drink made from fermented rice have flocked to the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California in San Francisco to taste some of the best sakes in the world. Held on an early Saturday in October, in conjunction with Japan’s official October 1 celebration, San Francisco’s Sake Day invites the public to try over 100 varieties of the drink.

With Izakaya-style snacks (Japanese pub food), live Japanese music, and four drinking stations, there’s plenty to do at Sake Day. Meet the toji, master sake brewers from Japanese and local breweries, at the special sake brewers tables and learn more about the art of making the 8 different varieties of special designation sake, or okutei meishō-shu.

Past breweries represented at Sake day have included Funusaka Brewery, Joto Sake, Japan Prestige Sake International, Niigate Sake Selections, Sake Story, and Ofuku Brewery. There have also been several Toji on hand to lend their expertise, including brewers from Imada Brewery, Rihaku Brewery, Watanabe Brewery, Tenryo Brewery, and Shirataki Brewery.

Tickets to Sake Day are around $75 and sell out fast. Ticket prices include admission, tastings, and snacks, with all of the proceeds benefiting the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California. After you’ve had your fill of sake, head over to Yoshi’s nearby for great Japanese food and live jazz.
