San Francisco is home to an incredibly vibrant theater community, and SF theaters ensure there’s never a shortage of great live action. Whether you’re looking for the biggest shows from Broadway or tiny independent hits, San Francisco theaters can be as mainstream or as far afield from the river as humanly possible (it is San Francisco, after all).
One of the biggest theaters in San Francisco, The Curran, lays steps from Union Square in Downtown SF. The Curran has enjoyed a long history of showcasing major traveling productions – from musicals to stalwart classics to the latest hits – and the beautiful venue has changed little since opening in 1922.
The nearby Geary Theater has been home to the highly regarded American Conservatory Theater troupe since the 60s, offering both classical and contemporary theater productions that regularly sell out, while The Golden Gate and The Orpheum Theatre have presented many mainstream Broadway hits, and both remain key stops on any major tour passing through town.
Of course, there are many other great theaters in SF to experience, from the historic Herbst Theatre, which hosts an array of programs like radio shows and jazz, to the kitschy dinnertime madness of Beach Blanket Babylon to the proud gay-themed productions at Theatre Rhinoceros.
Whether you’re in the mood for improv, local productions, or the biggest hits of the year, all of it can be found at San Francisco theaters.
