Stanford Stadium (Stanford) Information

Stanford Stadium (Stanford) - Stadium in San Francisco.

Stanford Stadium made its debut in 1921 as a horseshoe-shaped football and track stadium with wooden bleacher seating for 60,000 fans. It has since become home to one of the Pac-10’s most impressive football teams, the Stanford Cardinal’s.

Stanford Stadium was built in only four months – and rumor has it Stanford Stadium was built quickly because of the University’s rivalry with the University of California, Berkeley who were also in the process of constructing a new stadium. The new stadium took the place of Stanford Field and in 1925, 10,200 additional seats were added, nearly enclosing the horseshoe. Just two years later, fourteen more rows were added, bolstering the stadium’s maximum capacity to 85,500.

In 2005, the stadium was demolished and rebuilt. The new rectangular facility covers 18.4 acres and features 43 side rows, 22 rows on the end zones, 30 rows underneath the skybox, and more than twice as many spectator seats – 437 to be exact.

There have been many important and iconic events at Stanford Stadium such as international football matches for the 1984 Summer Olympics and Herbert Hoover’s acceptance speech for the 1928 Republican Presidential nomination.

Small but awesome setting

The stadium itself is not all that impressive with high school level concessions at best and a pretty small overall seating capacity. However, the walk to the stadium with the surrounding trees and then the steps up and into the actual seating area of the stadium is very cool. The small-capacity make the events held there seem a little less important, however, there is not a bad seat in the house and I have seen/heard the crowd create similar atmosphere to bigger stadiums. About an hour CalTrain ride from San Francisco, the stadium is fairly easy to get to and I would say worth the trip.
