California Memorial Stadium is a picturesque outdoor football stadium on the campus of The University of California in Berkeley, serving as the home field for the Golden Bears. The venue opened in 1923, seating 71,799 fans until 2010 when the three-phase, $321-million renovations began. Games at the California Memorial Stadium are mostly reserved for the Golden Bears.
Due to the Hayward Fault passing directly beneath the playing field, almost perfectly from one end zone to the other, it was decided that seismic renovations had to be made to ensure the structure’s safety, following a 2008 study that announced the potential hazardous dangers posed by the way the Stadium was constructed.
Boasting sweeping views of Berkeley Hills and Strawberry Canyon, Memorial Stadium was originally funded from public contributions as a memorial to Californians who lost their lives in World War I. John Galen Howard headed up the architectural committee responsible for the structure and its neoclassical aesthetic. In 2006, the stadium was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
