Japanese Peace Lantern Ceremony Description

Japanese Peace Lantern Ceremony - Special Event | Festival | Outdoor Event in San Francisco.

First held in 2002, the Japanese Peace Lantern Ceremony in Berkeley, CA, commemorates the anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings that occurred on Aug. 6 & 9, 1945. The event takes place annually in August at the north end of Aquatic Park, about 15 miles northwest of San Francisco.

The 2013 Japanese Peace Lantern Ceremony is free and open to the public, but volunteers are always needed to ensure that advertising, cleanup, and the ceremony itself runs smoothly. A volunteer form is available on the Japanese Peace Lantern Ceremony website. For those interested in attending, lantern decorating starts at 6:30pm. The lanterns are floated from 8–9pm.
