My Take: B Star provides an eclectic mix of food that won’t fail to disappoint. After just one meal I was completely hooked and B Star has instantly become one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. It features authentic flavors you won’t find elsewhere combined with a very relaxing and intimate atmosphere that facilitates warm conversations between friends, family, or your true love. B Star is the younger sister restaurant under the same ownership as the ever popular Burma Superstar. Both are located on Clement Street, deemed a mini Chinatown of the Richmond District. Like a star from which the restaurant takes its name, this little gem sparkles and shines in all areas. The food is extremely authentic, with a combination of flavors unlike you will see anywhere else. Vegetarians and self-claimed “Meat-atarians” will both leave well-satisfied. Prices generally stay under $20 for an entrée, very affordable considering the fresh ingredients and large portion sizes. Each dish I sampled left me desiring more and more. Each bite sprinkled with a variety of flavors from Burmese, Chinese, Japanese, and Indian cuisines. Tucked away on Clement Street, commonly revered for its abundance of delicious restaurants and bars, Burma Star is truly a hidden treasure. After waiting no time at all our group of four was shuffled into a nice table right next to the bar. The entire wait-staff was very attentive, refilling water without hesitation and offering recommendations as we navigated the menu. Each dish was brought out promptly. At the conclusion of our fantastic meal our waitress was kind enough to offer us a complimentary mango sorbet. As four college students strapped for cash we were eternally grateful and quickly dug into the glory of the sorbet, sighing with contentment as we polished it off. Overall this was a cultural experience into the flavors of Asia and gave each of us an intimate and fun night out without breaking the bank. The Scene: The scene at B Star is very diverse. From poor college students like my group of friends to couples and socialites, this place seems to attract a wide range of diners. The vibe is very ambient, with interesting light features and décor that included an effervescent lantern display in the center of the room and a rounded curtain at the entrance, making one feel as if they were stepping into another dimension. This restaurant is especially good for those trying to get into B Star’s older sister restaurant, Burma Superstar. Michelin recommended and with waits up to two hours for a table of two Burma Superstar definitely has somewhat of a cult following. Yet what many people don’t realize is that if you walk about a block or two you can order virtually the same food and with little to no wait at B Star. Cocktails and Cuisine: The food was incredible. Very diverse flavors that you won’t find elsewhere that overlap between Burmese, Chinese, Japanese, and Indian. The prices for the food are very reasonable considering the quality and portion sizes. I highly recommend the Tea Salad which is the shining star of B Star’s more upscale counterpart, Burma Superstar. We started off with the chicken lettuce wraps which came with a large enough portion for four people to share. Very delicately prepared and presented, the chicken wraps were a savory start to the meal. A must try appetizer that is not featured on the menu but is nonetheless available are the Samosas. The samosas include an incredibly flaky crust cooked to perfection with steaming potatoes and vegetables that spill out the sides when you take a bite. We ordered two plates of these, that’s how good they are. For my entrée I got the Green Plate, a magical concoction of quinoa, zucchini, round squash disks, baked tofu, tomatoes, mushrooms, and kale all topped with a delicious light sauce. As a vegetarian I was well impressed with their selection of vegetarian options. Highly recommended by the others in my party was the Lamb Curry. This dish includes a soft mound of rice that soaks up the flavorful mango spiked curry combined with delicate pieces of lamb. Prices: Most dishes are around $10-$15 with appetizers coming in around $6-$8. Overall great quality and quantity for the price. What to Wear: There really isn’t a dress code at B Star. I would say diners were dressed mostly casual, with jeans and t-shirts sufficing. But needless to say you can dress up more if you so choose. Insider Info/When to Go: My party of four went to B Star around 8pm and received no wait. Alternatively, B Star’s counterpart, Burma Superstar, had a 2 hour wait at this point. A great “secret menu” item is the Samosas. These either come as three or four but it will be hard to stop at just that, these things are freaking delicious. They are traditionally only offered at Burma Superstar and thus you will not find them on the menu but after a little inquiry we found out they would still serve them to us. And trust me, they are well worth it.
