Just on the southern edge of the busy Mission drinking scene, corner pub The Napper Tandy is authentically Irish from the name out front to the brogues of its waitresses to the all-you-can-eat fish and chips on Mondays.
From the outside, little sets the place apart from the slew of nearby bars save for the large front windows that give a glimpse into a cozy drinking den.
Substantial renovation in 2012 left the place with a clean look and minimal décor, complete with the standard collection of Guinness signs on the pastel walls and the standard collection of regulars that includes everyone from college kids to older businessmen catching a match on the TVs.
There’s a pool table for folks who don’t care for sports, though ESPN is still never far away thanks to the projection screen above the fireplace.
Unless there’s a big game, the daytime scene is relaxed and dominated by blue-collar locals and casual friends who stop in to chill at the bar or chat in the handful of booths over staples like pot pies and stout onion soup.
Although the neighborhood is known for the barhopping flood that flows through on Fridays, most of the amped-up suburbanites pass right by this pub, possibly to come back the next day for the $5 weekend breakfast specials, perfect for nursing hangovers with buttermilk pancakes and buttered crumpets.
The Napper Tandy won’t blow anyone’s mind, but it won’t blow the wallet either, making it an easy choice for soccer, soda bread, and a casual round of suds.
Diverse mix of casual college kids, soccer fans, Irish expats, blue-collar Joes, area businessmen sneaking in a lunchtime beer, and some of the preppier suburban party crowd on weekends, 20s to 40s+.
Several flat-screens and a projection screen favor European soccer matches, but also tune in major local games.
Pool table.
Old-school jukebox features standard collection of contemporary hits, retro faves, and some Irish classics.
Menu of Irish staples with some American favorites, including fish and chips, chowder, onion rings, and full Irish breakfasts. Weekend breakfast specials and several vegetarian dishes available.
Sides $1.50–$2.50, soups and salads $3–$10, entrées $7–$16, pastas $8–$10, omelets and other egg dishes $9–$10, weekend breakfast specials $5. Beer $4.50–$5.50, wine $5, cocktails and rails $6–$15.
Casual: jeans, t-shirts, sweaters, jerseys, business attire, sneakers, jumpers, blouses, cute skirts, anything goes.
Any time a big European soccer match is on, weekends before noon to get in on the cheap breakfast specials, or Thursday through Saturday nights for a buzzing crowd chatting and rocking out to the old-school jukebox.
Rosamunde Sausage Grill (2832 Mission Street) is a popular sausage joint with a large selection of meat and an impressive beer list that won’t break the bank.
