San Francisco Chinese New Year Overview

Chinese-Americans celebrate Chinese culture with culture hounds of all kinds at the San Francisco Chinese New Year. Every year, the festivities usher in a new zodiac animal, promising different things for different people depending on how the stars might align. Traditional Chinese take part in ancient Taoist and Buddhist traditions like lighting firecrackers, burning incense, and making offerings at temples throughout the Bay.

Culture hounds can watch the Golden Dragon and lion dancers in action at the historic San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade & Festival. Since 1858, the Chinese New Year in San Francisco has featured a wide array of authentic Chinese sights, sounds, and flavors. With the highest percentage of Chinese-Americans, the Bay’s celebrations are the biggest outside of China. The parade features celebrities and Miss Chinatown USA. At the Chinese New Year Flower Fair, gardeners can learn about and even take home potted bamboo, chrysanthemums, orchids, and snapdragons.

Foodies at the Chinese New Year in San Francisco can try traditional Chinese New Year dishes while music fans enjoy both classic and contemporary live Chinese music. With celebrity appearances and martial arts demonstrations there’s something for everyone at San Francisco’s Chinese New Year celebrations.
