Party Earth Skylark Review

The Scene

Skylark in San Francisco’s Mission is a dive bar entirely devoted to hip-hop. Show up nightly to bust a move or sway your roots in SF with Party Earth.

In business since the mid-90s, Skylark prides itself on being one of the only hip-hop dives in the city, hosting DJs nightly who specialize in urban beats with a little bit of disco, reggae, R&B, and soul thrown in.

As the sun sets, this joint draws a vast clientele of pop lockers, beat street bad boys, kids from the East Bay, and a good dollop of yuppies with a secret desire to bust an old-school move or two.

Décor-wise there isn’t much to look at – a few beige booths by the front window and along one side leading down to the cozy dance floor, itself rimmed by a few more booths, plus some firehouse-style bulbs hanging from dark wood ledges placed high on rose-colored walls, and a few industrial fans meant to combat the sweaty scene that quickly unfolds.

The fans don’t stand a chance.

Lines thirty deep are the norm on big nights, which draw the predictable barhopping throngs on weekends, but also promise a good audience during regular themes like Skylarking Mondays (roots and dancehall), Mixtape Wednesdays (an assorted mix of everything), and the all-girl Thursday Peaches crew.

Drink prices at Skylark can trend a couple bucks above the average dive, but with the exception of Wednesdays, there’s never a cover, and frequent drink specials make it easy to toss back a few budget-friendly cocktails before spending the rest of the night bumping shoulders.

Tip from Jonah:

The free burlesque show, held on every second Friday is not to be missed! And even if that doesn’t do it for you, just stick around for the DJs afterwards.

  • Crowd

Devoted hip-hop fans, raucous root-sters, reggae revelers, kids in from the East Bay, yuppies looking to show they still got it, underground music scenesters, high-kicking hipsters, mid-20s to late 30s.

  • Entertainment / Music

DJs spin hip-hop, disco, reggae, roots, dancehall, R&B, and/or soul nightly.

Free burlesque performances on second Fridays at 7pm and 8pm.

Flat-screen over the bar usually tuned to sports in the early hours.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

Food available from a nearby Indian joint during Happy Hour. Happy Hour M–Tu 6–9pm, W–F 4–9pm.

  • Prices

Cover charge $5/Wednesdays only. Beer $5, wine $6–$7, wells, cocktails, and spirits $6–$11.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for the biggest crowds.

  • Close By

Double Dutch (3192 16th Street) is a tiny club heavily devoted to retro rap culture.

Put your dancing shoes on and get ready to boogie! Skylark is the perfect place if you love hip hop. It plays good music all night and perfect way to meet people who share the same music taste as you. Perfect place to let off steam from a week of hard work. Quench your thirst and right outside they have these bomb grill hotdogs smothered with onions you can't help, but to have one!
