San Lorenzo, Rome –
In the university district of San Lorenzo, all roads seem to lead to Piazza degli Aurunci, a square at the heart of the neighborhood where alternative, punk, and student types gather to hang out with friends and enjoy a few affordable beers.
During the day, the quiet piazza resembles any other residential area, with locals bustling to and fro to the food markets and running daily errands.
By night, however, the square is dominated by throngs of rowdy young locals who use the ample space and the steps of the church as their personal living room.
Though the tattooed and pierced denizens may seem a bit rough and tumble, the overall atmosphere at Piazza degli Aurunci is one of friendly camaraderie where everyone seems to know everyone else.
All types and ages by day, younger locals, artists, and students by night, late teens to early 30s.
People-watching, street musicians, occasional poetry/prose readings, political conventions, and music events.
Caffè Aurunci offers an excellent aperitivo and has outdoor seating on the square. A few kebab and pizza places are located right around the corner.
Caffè Aurunci: Aperitivo €8, kebab €4, pizza slice €2.50.
Anything goes.
After 9pm, especially on weekends.
