Just the kind of typical Parisian café that could easily be featured in a Jean-Luc Godard film, Chez Jeannette is a charming eatery and bar whose original mid-century décor and location near the up-and-coming Canal St. Martin attracts a flirty and chatty clientele of bohemian locals and hip film and media types.
Vintage elements like the turquoise neon sign, zinc bar, wood wall panels, mirrored pillars, satin lampshades, and original café chairs add character to the single large room and its lively drinking scene, while the high ceilings and a year-round terrace create a sense of space even on the busiest nights.
The relaxed, anything-goes atmosphere is reflected by the quirky hipster waiters, who happily elbow their way through the chatty crowd, stopping to mingle with the outgoing patrons.
Equally popular for afternoon coffee, early evening aperitifs, and the Saturday-night DJ parties, Chez Jeannette is a chic and unpretentious bare bones venue that negates the elitist reputation of the French social scene by welcoming guests with open arms and a good dose of French camaraderie.
All ages and types during the day. Local hipsters, bohos, groups, students, and international film and media professionals at night, mid-20s to mid-30s.
Ambient pop music. DJs spin on Saturday nights.
French café classics including foie gras, charcuterie, beef tartar, and a large selection of salads. Smoking patio open year round.
Menu €6–€16.50. Beer €2.50+, wine €3+, cocktails €6.50+, aperitifs €2.50+, coffee €1+.
Boho aesthetic with vintage dresses for women and vests, t-shirts, jeans, and even sneakers for guys.
Thursday evenings for a bustling after-work crowd and Saturday nights for the crowds coming for the DJ.
Rex Club (5 Boulevard Poissonnière) is a late-night club scene about a ten-minute walk away.
