A place which can not be done in one visit. Always crowded but the visitors are always civil. You won't feel the need to rush through; the exhibits are always provoking and the current shows on Le Corbusier and the Rain Room by James Turrell are a must. I never am bored here. The film department is also awesome ..... I have seen rarely shown italian films during their festival.
The Museum of Modern Art is a museum that has exactly that - modern art. Which may seem obvious, but I only say that to warn you because modern art isn't for everyone. If you want to see pretty paintings of flowers and nature and ancient sculptures, or if you're one of those people that absolutely cannot stand when someone paints a portrait with two lines and a dot and calls it "artistic", then the MoMA may not be for you (check out the Metropolitan Museum of Art instead!). However, if you do find modern art appealing or want to check it out, the MoMA is definitely the best place in New York, if not the country, to get your fix! I think it's one of the trendiest, most hip museums in NYC and while it's regular exhibits are incredible, it's the extra stuff that's really amazing. Special exhibits like Tim Burton's that was on recently are a must see, and the museum offers screenings of rare movies and documentaries for only $12. Regular admission is $25, but it is free on Fridays from 4-8 PM. However it does get crowded on Fridays, so be prepared for lots of craning your neck around people to see all the art! The MoMA can seem like an intimidating place sometimes though. Trust me, I felt inadequate and unintelligent every time I didn't understand an art piece! But is also sophisticated and enlightening, and it has some of the most unique and rare art that you would not be able to find anywhere else. So whether you like modern art or "get" modern art, you are sure to have your mind blown by this museum!
