MoMA PS1 User Reviews

Average rating:
An excellent and unique modern-art experience
James B. Nov 3, 2013
This museum's setting in a refurbished school is just as appropriate as it is ironic. On the one hand tour guides will walk you through the educational experience of learning about the modern art, including furry, hole-y, wall-hung rugs, abstract images painted directly on the walls, and comprehensive single-artist exhibits. On the other hand the daytime drinking, ubiquitous music, and occasionally psychedelic atmosphere make this more than a typical museum walk-through. The downsides have to do with the art itself. Like most modern art, some pieces walk the border of (1) inspiring conversation about what constitutes art and (2) insulting you with their inanity. A collection of trash cans and blue cellophane on a window are prime examples. Likewise, "Warm Up", the summer concert series, hosts alternative artists who provide some fun of the sort that you typically would not see in an art museum, but who are by no means professional musicians. One of the many pleasant surprises of the place is the classroom dinette. The menu is written on the chalkboard, the seating is in desk/chair combo's, and the cuisine is of a quality high enough above average to make the dinette a destination by itself. Overall, this is a unique experience and highly recommended at least for the novelty of it.
