Chelsea / Flatiron, New York –
A large pub that feels far removed from the ever-congested late-night world of nearby clubs, Dewey’s Flatiron draws a sports-loving crowd for cheap game-day pitchers and greasy, filling bar food.
Seventeen flat-screens on the exposed brick walls display football, baseball, and Premier League soccer, all of which prompt the customary hoots and howls of exultation from fans when a big match is on.
Otherwise, the large joint stays pretty chill, with lots of dudes fresh off work from neighborhood offices chilling with their $4 Happy Hour Buds.
History buffs may get a kick out of the two sepia-toned Battle of Manila Bay murals that adorn the walls, not to mention the one of Navy Admiral George Dewey, of Spanish-American War fame, for whom the bar is named. Twenty-foot ceilings give the space an expansive feel, while extra touches like an antique cash register and a replica of Dewey’s Arch – which long ago stood across 24th Street – add to the bar’s vintage vibe.
There’s ample bar seating on the ground floor, with leather booths in the back for larger groups, while an upstairs section with a second bar plays host to frequent private parties, as well as to San Diego transplants on Sundays since the place is NYC’s official Chargers bar.
Comfort food like gravy fries and jalapeño poppers complement a modest menu of burgers and sandwiches, all of which help make Dewey’s Flatiron one of the more affordable pubs in the area, especially for those opposed to shelling out for bottle service.
Sports fans, local business types, groups of office mates, San Diego transplants, late 20s to late 30s.
Seventeen flat-screens mostly tuned to sports, although a few will occasionally be tuned to movies or other programming.
Varied Pandora playlist fills the void when nobody is on the field.
Hefty portions of traditional bar fare, including mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, gravy French fries, burgers, and a few non-traditional items like shrimp linguini and teriyaki-glazed salmon.
Happy Hour M–F 4:30–7pm.
Appetizers $6–$15, soups $4–$8, salads $10–$16, sandwiches $11–$14, burgers $11–$15, entrées $13–$21, desserts $7.
Beer $4–$11, Coronitas bucket $12, wine $8–$12/glass or $30–$35/bottle, wells $8.50, shot of Jameson and PBR Tallboy $10/offered daily.
Casual: t-shirts, jeans, flip-flops, sneakers, football jerseys, baseball caps, after-work business wear, simple dresses, skirts.
Any evening midweek to chill after work, anytime a big game is on, or Saturdays for the open bar special available for the ladies.
Legends (6 West 33rd Street) is a bit more of an upscale Irish pub, with three levels, lots of sports on the tubes, and a festive crowd of local business types. The basement level, called the Football Factory, is a popular go-to for soccer fans.
