Lower East Side, New York –
Named for the 19th-century French poet, Verlaine is an artsy lounge that’s become a favorite for after-work get-togethers and mellow mingling with a diverse crowd of young professionals, local artists, and laid-back Europeans.
Smooth ambient music greets patrons as they enter the single narrow room, where couples and companions huddle around small candlelit tables to nibble Southeast Asian tapas, and singles gather at the glass-covered bar to chat over pitchers of sangria.
A small alcove with brown banquettes and big round cocktail tables offers a relaxing place for stylish guests and their friends to recline in the subdued red glow of a single lamp, while ever-changing exhibits of works by local artists – not to mention the weekly poetry readings – provide plenty of conversation starters.
For patrons with a cultural bent – and a taste for long Happy Hours and specialty martinis – Verlaine is a don’t-miss hotspot for a cool Lower East Side evening.
An ethnically diverse melting pot of laid-back young professionals, local artists, and Europeans, mid-20s to late 30s.
Ambient music ranging from indie rock to African and funk. Monthly rotation of art features local artists. Poetry readings Sundays at 5pm.
Menu of Southeast Asian tapas including summer rolls, vegetable curry puffs, and shrimp tempura served daily 5pm–midnight. Happy Hour daily 5–10pm.
Small plates $7–$12. Beer $5–$13, wine $7–$11, cocktails $7–$10.
Trendy casual: jeans and heels, work attire. Dressier on weekends: button-downs, artsy dresses.
Any night before 10pm for Happy Hour. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights for the biggest crowd and a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
After sipping cheap lychee martinis, enjoy more drink specials at Boss Tweeds Saloon (115 Essex Street). $20 for a three hour open bar anytime before 11pm.
