Fashionistas looking for a place to wear their killer heels will want to totter over to Southside, an upscale nightclub promising a high-energy night out to the few lucky souls who survive the bouncer test.
Popular with rich kids and affluent neighborhood artists, models, and fashion industry types, the space features a warm décor of tufted leather booths and black subway tiles offset by the softer touches of fern wallpaper and scattered potted plants.
Chic young professionals and former prep-schoolers hang out by the DJ station in the middle of the floor to check out the well-to-do party girls breaking into dance, or congregate on the banquettes for some loud conversation over expensive cocktails.
Little loveseat cubbyholes carved into the black-tiled walls provide cozy spots for couples to enjoy table service, while other Prada-wearing creatives looking for a respite from the crowd take refuge in the somewhat private alcove in the back of the room.
With a solid mix of hip-shaking and mingling among its fashionable and frolicsome clientele, Southside always maintains an air of excitement and is bearing the load in helping revive the underground NYC dance party.
Fashion industry types, affluent SoHo artists, models, young professionals, and privileged former prep-school kids during the week, with more outer-borough folks on the weekends, early 20s to mid-30s.
Nightly DJ spins indie, rock, and 80s on Wednesdays, house on Thursdays, and dancy pop and rock on Fridays and Saturdays.
Table reservations recommended on weekends, with a one-bottle minimum. Coat check. Cell phone boosters.
Beer $8+, cocktails $15+, bottle service minimum $450+/one bottle. Coat check $4.
Artsy casual to dressy: button-downs, polos, skinny jeans, and fedoras for guys, and stylish leggings, flowy tops, skirts, dresses, and very high heels for women.
Thursdays for the busiest scene and biggest crowd of artists and fashion types. Fridays and Saturdays for more weekend debauchery.
Just down the street is the chic and exclusive GoldBar (389 Broome Street) with a similar crowd and great DJ dance music.
