WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK –
While legions of PBR-dispensing bars help Williamsburg stay in the center of the hipster universe, Tuffet stakes its own claim to the neighborhood spirit with an artful mix of cheeses, meats, and drafts to delight any gourmand in skinny jeans.
The art deco interior consists of the main bar area and the smaller Study, where post-show musicians and artists gather to drink and talk, while worldly locals and creative young professionals sit at the bar or small candlelit tables to survey the nineteen cheese and meat offerings on the cozy tavern’s massive chalkboard.
To make choosing – and knowledgeable eating – easier, the hipsterish staff sorts meats and cheeses by type and assigns each a letter or number, which is then chalked onto black slate platters to help curious daters and after-work nibblers differentiate the buffalo Casatica from the Quijote chorizo.
When the weather cooperates, laid-back locals settle in at the metal tables on the ivied brick patio to have a smoke beneath a web of sparkling Christmas lights.
With character and taste to spare, Tuffet hits the spot for Brooklynites craving a washed rind, a cold beer, and a good night.
Laid-back hipsters, sophisticated locals, creative young professionals, and after-show groups of artists and musicians, 20s to early 40s.
Indie rock and cool chill jazz over the house system. Free Wi-Fi.
Wide selection of meats and cheeses from around the world, accompanied by sides like nuts, honey, and dates. Happy Hour M–F 2–7pm, Sa–Su 1–6pm. The Study can be rented for private parties.
Meat and cheese plates $10–$32. Beer $4–$11, wine $6–$10, cocktails $6–$10, coffee $2.50+.
Hipster casual: jeans, vintage t-shirts, sneakers for guys and girls.
Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for the biggest crowds.
Only a block away, the rustic The Drink (228 Manhattan Avenue) features a quirky nautical décor, affordable drinks, and an amiable crowd.
