The tall, dark windows of this unmarked venue may seem to blend in with the derelict industrialism of South 4th Street, but just beyond them lies The Woods, a cavernous den fueled by the hip creativity that Williamsburg is famous for.

Sky-high shelving lined with top-shelf liquor and rustic taxidermy looms over the diverse crowd of tattooed club chicks, skater-artists, and wealthy punkish types, who mingle and flirt under the dim red lanterns over the bar as they peruse the chalkboards for new microbrews or cocktails to try, like the unusual Pickle Back, which combines a shot of Jameson with a shot of pickle juice.

A small elevated platform in one corner hosts local rock bands for the occasional secret show, as well as nightly DJs who throw eclectic theme parties for the relaxed sway-and-bop crowds, while a few soft leather couches hugging the wall offer space for both hipsters and music industry pros to chat and contemplate the giant scrap-metal stars hanging on the walls above them.

Those who prefer to drink their margaritas under the real stars can mosey out to the picnic tables on the wide tree-lined terrace, where local devotees gather around a taco truck to put down a spicy base before the night gets deep.

An exciting oasis in a dead part of town, The Woods is worth every step off the beaten path for patrons who like a mix of down-to-earth weirdness and uncompromising cool.

Tip from Jonah:

Try stopping by fairly late on a weeknight to see if something fun is happening – a secret show, a cool DJ set. This place is a must for anyone in love with Williamsburg.

  • Crowd

Hip-hop skaters, cool hipsters, and professional artist/musician types, 20s to early 30s.

  • Entertainment / Music

Live rock bands and DJs almost every night. iPod mixes on off nights. Theme parties.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

Taco truck out back serving tacos, burritos, and burgers.

  • Prices

    Tacos $3, burritos $6, cheeseburgers $5. Beer $2+, wine $6+, cocktails $6+.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

Club casual or fancy dive attire: cool t-shirts and jeans, fly kicks, tattoos, vintage dresses, boots.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Good most nights later on, but best on Fridays and Saturdays for the bigger events.

  • Close By

Death By Audio (49 South 2nd Street), a nearby DIY venue, is a good place to catch a dirtier performance before packing into The Woods.

Into The Woods We Go..

We used to have this bar called, Howl, in the Bronx back at Fordham. After coming here with a huge group of friend's for one of my roommate's birthday's, we decided this is the Brooklyn, hipster version of that bar and just as good, if not better. The crowd here is young and flirty. I guarantee that if you're actually looking, you can definitely go home with someone by the end of the night. (You're welcome Woods for the best compliment/plug ever). It was June, so our group sauntered out to the patio and took over the entire back. Obviously, we camped out for tacos the entire night in between drinks. You have to try the tacos, even if it's just one bite. They're delicious and cheap! The drinks are cheap as well so careful on how many you start to down before you realize you're in la, la, land. Also, wasn't the biggest fan of the unisex bathroom, but hey I guess it leads to later nights for some people. This is one of those places that you definitely have to be in an upbeat, fun-loving mood. It gets packed and lively and wild and young. You feel like you're in some distant college limbo and sitting in the corner sipping a beer all night will not do in a place like the Woods. My other con is that this place is in Brooklyn. I'm a Manhattanite, so it's a teensy bit out of the way, but if you have friends here, by all means go! You won't be disappointed if you like inexpensive beverages, hot hipsters and social crowds.

This out-of-the-way Williamsburg bar, lounge, and venue perfectly straddles the line between low-brow hangout and classy club. The dark interior with its small corner stage and looming shelf-laden bar has a brooding sense of possibility to it, and the wiseass (and dishy!) staff are always happy to talk Brooklyn and booze with you. The backyard is lovely, and contains an awesome mural and, of course, a taco truck, which provides patrons with cheap eats and burgers with which to soak up the pickle backs and cheap beers available at the bar. While it's an extra little walk from the L train, I'd make the Woods a destination spot.
