Studio Square 35-33 36th St Astoria, NY 11106 Neighborhood: Astoria The Scene Studio Square is located in the heart of NYC’s most up and coming neighborhood Astoria. This place a HUGE outside area with over 30 picnic tables, so if you get there early enough you will have no problem getting a seat. On the inside is a beautiful bar that offers beers as diverse as the people inside and a house made sangria that looks girly, but is delicious and packs a mean punch. At night the crowd is mostly younger, but during world cup/soccer games you will see people of all different ages and ethnicity. The bar food here is always on the money. The one problem is you may have to wait on a 15-minute line to get it. The service is fast, but the crowd is massive. Don’t forget to ask about the Barrel Retirement Plan. The oldest keg on tap is always $4 a • Crowd • If you are looking to avoid the Jersey Shore cast then this is the place for you. A very laid back bar where incidents are few and far between. • A lot of girls come to Studio Square at night. I would say it was a 2:1 guy to girl ratio, but giving how many people are here you will see plenty of girls (if that is why you are going) • Entertainment / Music A big projector screen outside as well as TV’s behind most of the bars this is THE best place to watch Soccer in NYC. At night they play a diverse set of music and it really depends what the DJ feels like playing. • Food / Miscellaneous The fries are the way to go $10 gets you a KFC sized bucket of French fries that are out of this world. They can probably feed 3-5 people. The Nachos are disappointing, the wings are over-priced and the burger does its job. Nothing is so bad that I wouldn’t recommend eating. The food taste exactly how it should. Like bar food. • Prices $10 fries with the occasional All you can drink and a meal for $35 is the way to go. They offer tickets online and at door. • What to Wear / Dress Code Anything goes as long as you are wearing something. • Hot Nights / When to Go This place is the perfect place to go when you have nothing else going on. This place is frequently packed especially when the NY football teams are on as well as soccer and Monday Night football. The Bathrooms I had to give a special shout out to the bathrooms. Being at a place when you have to take a poop is the worst feeling in the world. These bathrooms are not only individual stalls but they are like having your own individual bathroom with a door and a lock that works. Definitely a poop (or puke) friendly bathroom!
2 Words: Loaded Lemonade

My Take: Nice weather, your favorite team, a group of great friends, and alcohol; what’s not to love here? Studio Square is referred to as the “new” beer garden in Astoria. With plenty of seating and TVs scattered all over the place, it’s the perfect venue to grab a group of friends on a nice day and watch a game. They allow beer pong to be played at the tables and the crowd is friendly enough that it is very easy to mingle and mix groups. If you find yourself wanting an escape from Manhattan for a change, then I suggest Studio Square. Their Loaded Lemonade cocktails hit the spot on a hot summer day! Beware though, CASH ONLY. The Scene: Wooden tables adorn both the inside and outside spaces of Studio Square. Flat screen TVs as well as a giant outdoor projector display popular sporting events. Earlier in the day, you will find the crowd to be more family oriented including small children. As the day progresses, the crowd becomes a bit younger and the place becomes more packed. If you want to score a wooden table for a large group of friends, then try coming in between 7-8pm, or after a game ends. There seems to be a small window of time when groups clear out. The crowd itself seems very Jersey-esque. While a beer garden is typically known for casual attire, there are plenty of girls decked out in full accessories and heels to probably pick-up the male dominated crowd. Cocktails & Cuisine: Unless you are a fan of pub fare, eat before you visit Studio Square. Their food options are extremely limited and you’ll find yourself eating an entire bucket of salty fries just to curb your appetite. If that’s your kind of meal, then no judgment here! As for drinks, beers are fresh on tap and are rotated seasonally. For those who enjoy cocktails, try their sangria pitchers that are made with real fruit or their loaded lemonade. They are both surprisingly refreshing and truly add to the garden’s summery ambiance. Prices: Seasonal Beers ($7+), Cocktails ($7 - $25), Wine ($7 - $18), Bucket of Fries ($5 - $16), Wings ($8 - $20), Salads ($7 - $10), Other Dishes ($8 - $10), Sandwiches ($11 - $12), American Grill ($7 - $13), German Grill ($6 - $8). What to Wear: Since the majority of Studio Square is an outdoor space, dress accordingly for the weather. It does get cooler in Astoria (as opposed to Manhattan), at night. If you plan to camp out here for the entire day, then bring a light jacket or sweater. Attire ranges from casual to dressy casual. Girls can wear anything from jeans to sundresses with platform sandals and guys can wear shorts or jeans with sneakers. If there is a game on, it’s not uncommon to find many of the males in the crowd with jerseys on or another item that represents a favorite team. It’s a beer garden, so while it may be loud, it’s also very laid back. Insider Info/When to go: CASH ONLY! An ATM is offered inside, but you will have to pay a fee, so it’s best to stuff your wallet ahead of time. Additional Insider Info: Studio Square allows various networks to use their space to film TV series and commercials. The most recently filmed clips there were from Nurse Jackie and a Guinness Black Lager commercial.
