Theresienwiese Information

Theresienwiese - Event Space | Park in Munich.

Theresienwiese is a 420,000 square meter open space in Munich’s Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district. It serves as the official grounds for Oktoberfest.

The name of the site is taken from Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, who was the wife of Crown Prince Ludwig I. Wiese is the German word for meadow; hence, literally in English the site is called Therese’s Meadow.

Ludwig and Therese’s wedding took place there in 1810, and since then Oktoberfest has been celebrated there every year in commemoration.

In addition to Oktoberfest, Theresienwiese is also the site of annual spring and winter festivals.

Notable attractions around Theresienwiese are the Bavaria statue, which you can climb into and get a great view from inside her head out over the square, and the neo-gothic St. Paul’s Church.
