Gasteig Information

Gasteig - Concert Venue | Theater in Munich.

Gasteig is a cultural center opened in 1985 and located in Munich’s Au-Haidhausen district just east of the center of the city.

Gasteig is composed of four separate venues: The Philharmonic hall, which hosts the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, has a capacity of over 2,000 spectators in its seashell-like, acoustically impressive space. The Kleiner Konzertsall (the Small Concert Hall) seats around 200 people and caters to chamber music. The Carl Orff Hall seats around 600 and is a stage for drama.

Performances at Gasteig have included acts by, Joan Biaz, Emmylou Harris, the London Symphony Orchestra, Paolo Conte and Diana Krall.

Gasteig is also the site of the Richard Strauss Conservatory, the Münchner Volkshochschule (Adult Education Center), the central branch of the Municipal Library and various small shops and cafés.

Most events of the Munich Filmfest and much of the Munich Biennale take place at the Gasteig.

The former estate, demolished in 1979, located behind the Gasteig was the stage for the Beer Hall Putsch, the failed attempt by Hitler and the Nazi’s to seize political power in Munich in 1923, and the site of the 1939 assassination attempt of Adolf Hitler by Georg Elser.
