The large Muffathalle was opened in 1993 and is located in Munich’s Haidhausen district.
Originally built as a water pumping station in 1837 the Muffatwerk was named after Charles Francis Muffat, Munich’s city architect who was responsible for the construction of the plant. In 1973 the plant closed down and remained closed until 1992. In 1993 the Muffathalle opened and in 2002 opened the large adjoining beer gardens.
In 2008 the floor space for events was increased from 1,100 to 3,000 square meters. As a consequence the name Muffathalle used to designate the entire complex was changed to Muffatwerk.
Today the former turbine hall of the hydropower station houses Muffathalle and Muffatcafé, while the original boiler house built in Greek Revival style has been remodeled by a team of architects and accommodates club Ampere.
Muffathalle is a venue for large concerts and, in the summer, open air discos with electronic music, drum and bass, hip hop and acid jazz.
Performances at Muffathalle have included acts by, Nina Hagen, Onyx, Henry Rollins, Death Cab for Cutie, Belle and Sebastian, M.I.A, and the late Gil Scott-Heron.
