Maxvorstadt, Munich –
What separates Augustinerkeller from all the other beer halls in Munich – at least in the minds of the locals – is its reputation for having the best brew in town served straight from the taps in the oaken barrels.
On any warm day, the place is packed with regulars and visitors alike tossing back liters of beer under the shade of ancient chestnut trees – and since this is the second largest beer garden in Munich, the crowds are quite impressive.
As with most beer gardens, Augustinerkeller also offers hearty Bavarian dishes and special treats like Obazda, a traditional savory cheese spread that goes great with an oversized pretzel.
The venue is definitely worth a visit on colder days, too, when customers can duck inside and spread out in the spacious, high-ceilinged rooms covered in traditional Bavarian woodcarvings.
There’s a lot of history at this beer hall/garden/restaurant, so patrons at Augustinerkeller will not only leave with an excellent buzz and full tummies, but with a deeper cultural understanding, too.
...well, at least the first two.
Locals and visitors of all ages.
Live German bands play on the weekends.
Traditional beer garden menu features many pork dishes.
