La Latina / Lavapiés, Madrid –
On the southeast side of the historical center of Madrid lies the former Jewish quarter of Lavapiés, a neighborhood that has been transformed over hundreds of years into a vibrant multicultural mix of cosmopolitan life.
With an immigrant population estimated at over fifty percent, the barrio’s narrow streets resonate with the sounds of languages from Africa, Asia, and the Indian subcontinent and are perfumed with the aromas of all types of ethnic and regional cuisines.
Running through the heart of Lavapiés is Calle Argumosa, a wide and winding tree-lined street teeming with an eclectic choice of lively establishments. By day, the sidewalks are full of tables where locals sit to enjoy a drink in the shade, while at night the area comes alive with a unique and vibrant crowd of night owls sporting dreadlocks, body piercings, and bohemian attire.
The scene may seem a bit seedy, but the vibe is almost universally upbeat and friendly, and the late-night air is full of laughter, singing, and Latin and reggae rhythms.
Whether patrons are in the mood for drinks at a sidewalk café, dancing in a small cover charge-free club, lounging in a dark, smoky bar, or just snacking on some good spicy curry, Calle Argumosa offers a unique atmosphere and a variety of venues where people of all types are bound to find something to their taste.
This part of Lavapiés has a reputation for being a bit rough, but it may be mostly exaggeration. Madrid is far safer than most big cities, even in Lavapiés – just like anywhere else, it’s enough to be aware of your surroundings. The area is full of fun and friendly people, so just go with an open mind and a relaxed attitude.
Multicultural and somewhat bohemian, 20s and 30s.
Street performers and music of every genre at the numerous establishments that line the blocks.
A wide selection of international foods.
Varies by venue, but something for every budget.
Casual.
Any night after 10pm.
