For a week in February, Madrid celebrates Carnival with dances, parades, and age-old traditions. The annual Madrid Carnival features a Grand Carnival Parade at Plaza Mayor in Madrid as well as a variety of wild fun for revelers of all ages at events throughout the city.

From traditional dances to a wide range parades, there’s something for everyone at the annual Madrid Carnival. At the costume contest, colorful participants come decked out as everything from traditional jesters to the latest cartoon characters. The festivities end with the symbolic burial of sardines, harkening back to an ancient Catholic custom.
