La Latina / Lavapiés, Madrid –
A swanky Japanese restaurant by day, Shoko transforms by night into a sexy dance club that offers a unique and upper scale alternative in the otherwise rustic and old-fashioned neighborhood of La Latina.
Patrons are introduced to the beautiful space first through an open-air arboretum whose centerpiece is a grand and carefully pruned tree bathed in a deep light, a scene that sets the organic and colorful tone of the experience ahead.
In the spacious, oval-shaped dance floor area, black and white ottomans are interspersed with clusters of bamboo shoots, glowing red and seeming to spring from the floor, only to wind their way to the top of the vaulted ceiling.
As things heat up, the stylish and sometimes provocatively dressed clientele takes to the dance floor to bump and grind to hip-hop beats and reggaetón under a bank of bright blue spotlights as the bamboo stalks begin to pulsate with colors in perfect sync with the music.
Those in need of a breather can retreat to Shoko’s ample lounge and bar area just off the dance floor or claim a comfy chair in the upstairs lounge, whose violet lights and view of the dancers create a relaxing little getaway.
Well-dressed, unpretentious, and flirtatious, mid-20s to mid-30s.
Hip-hop and reggaetón.
