Malasaña / Chueca, Madrid –
Renowned for its live music, El Junco is an unassuming, funky little jazz club that attracts a clientele of young and vivacious music lovers who crowd around the stage to dance and cheer.
Bathed in soft blue and red light, this comfortably dark basement-level haven provides a vibrant environment for savvy customers who want something more from the city’s sometimes monotonous music scene.
In the tranquil early evening hours, hip patrons gather at either of the two bars to chat and groove to the mellow background music – but at 11:30pm, the space comes alive as bands take the stage to treat the crowd to an eclectic mix of jazz, blues, funk, and classic R&B.
The musicians take a break on Saturday nights, when El Junco transforms into a packed and bouncing mini-club and the youthful crowd dances to upbeat trip-hop, electronic, and even salsa until the wee hours.
Hip musicians and music lovers, 20s and 30s.
Live jazz, blues, and funk Sundays through Fridays. DJs spin jazz, reggae, salsa, and more on Saturdays.
None.
Cover charge €12/Th–Sa. Beer €4, cocktails €6–€8.
Casual.
Any night, but the very best acts take the stage on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
