L.A. Derby Dolls

The LA Derby Dolls is a roller derby league in Downtown, Los Angeles where multiple teams compete inside the Doll Factory where a couple hundred fans pack in to drink and cheer on the incessant pummeling. The league was founded back in 2003 and features four teams including the Fight Crew, Tough Cookies, Sirens, and the Varsity Brawlers. The league also features an all-star team called the LA Ri-ettes, which travels the country playing against rival roller derby all-star teams. Some notable Derby Dolls include Gori Spelling, Cris Affliction, Chargin’ Tina, Mourning Wood, RegulateHer, and Demolicious. LA Derby Dolls tickets can be purchased online or at the door if they’re not sold out.

O man these girls are TOUGH!!!

Vodka Toxic tears around the banked track, six seconds left on the clock, and brutally slams Mourning Wood into the rail. Vodka slides past her, scoring the one point necessary to bring the Varsity Brawlers’ score to 64 over the Tough Cookies’ 63. The crowd roars, PBRs are raised, it’s any given Saturday at the Doll Factory. And anything can happen in the second half. Now in their ninth year, the Dolls have grown into a full-blown phenomenon that consistently sells out their Filipinotown-based facility to loyal fans and the uninitiated alike. During halftime, the eclectic crowd disperses onto the flat track where a stage is set up in the corner, where many up and coming bands make their debut. Multiple vendors set up their various wares, from onesies that read, “My Aunt Can Body Check Your Aunt,” to brightly colored fishnet tutus, to homemade cookies. In case the Rockabillies pushing portable bars are too fast, there’s a stationary bar smack in the middle. If the cookies aren’t enough to soak up the Jack Daniels, there are also food trucks lined up outside boasting good eats anywhere from hot dogs to pizza to Hawaiian BBQ. Belly full and wallet a little lighter from all the new gear and grub, find a spot nestled between the ubiquitous, die-hard derby fan (who, unlike with other sports, will happily explain the intricacies of the game) and the couple on a daring internet date and think up a cool derby name while cheering on a (possibly new) favorite team.
