The Ford Amphitheatre is part of the John Anson Ford Theatres complex, named after the founder of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and situated in Hollywood. The 1,245-seat outdoor amphitheater and smaller 87-seat indoor theater together make up one of the oldest performing arts venues in Los Angeles.
Opened in 1920, the original (wooden) Ford Amphitheatre burned down in 1929. The present theater reopened two years later, made out of concrete and designed in the style of ancient Judaic architecture.
The theater was occasionally used for Shakespearean theater, jazz concerts, and dance performances until 1993, when the ‘Ford Amphitheatre Summer Season’ was created.
The present summer season at the Ford aims to showcase the diverse cultures of Los Angeles County. Events at the Ford Amphitheatre range from live music, theater performances, and film screenings to circus acts, dance musicals, and interactive family events.
Past music concerts at the Ford Amphitheatre include performances by Lady Antebellum, John Mayer, Kina Grannis, Jane’s Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Sigur Ros.
