West Hollywood, Los Angeles –
Classically posh and surprisingly accessible, the enchanting Bar Marmont is a popular haunt for Hollywood denizens of all stripes who love good food and conversation.
Just inside, patrons are greeted by a lounge area whose trussed ceilings, skylights, and hanging plants create the feel of an airy outdoor café where everyone from affluent entertainment industry types to scruffy musicians lounge on leather ottomans to smoke and discuss their latest projects.
French doors lead to a tiny bohemian bar decked out in flowered wallpaper, surreal Asian-inspired artwork, and a smattering of tables where tourists and professionals on dates gather to chit-chat over excellent cocktails.
Those who prefer a little more space to indulge in selections from the delectable menu can step down to the elegant dining room – whose old-Hollywood décor of plush red banquettes, lace draping, mirrors, and walls of ivory molding are presided over by an oil painting of Ho Chi Minh – or gather at the second bar where red silk lanterns cast a warm glow on the stuffed peacocks, the pinned butterfly specimens on the ceiling, and the stylish clientele of celebs, hipsters, and internationals.
Although the vibe is generally low-key, the lights go down and the music goes up after 11pm when a younger and more vivacious crowd trickles in.
Definitely more hopping on the weekends, Bar Marmont nonetheless has plenty to offer all week long, whether patrons show up for a swanky dinner date, pre-club cocktails with a group of friends, or an intimate tête-a-tête in some dimly-lit nook.
Well-dressed internationals, after-work entertainment industry types, some Hollywood hipsters, some tourists, and celebs, mostly 30s to 50s.
Nightly DJs spin a wide mix of music from rock to international beats. Otherwise, loungey Mediterranean and Brazilian grooves from an iPod playlist.
European-influenced pub food, small plates, and share platters including crab and avocado, grilled rosemary prawns, rustic lamb sandwich, and lemon-roasted bass. Kitchen closes at 1am.
Bar snacks $4–$8, appetizers $8–$18, entrées $16–$27. Beer $8+, wine $10+, cocktails $12+. Valet parking $12.
Anything from jeans and nice t-shirts to slacks, blazers, dresses, and heels.
Any night for chilling out in a laid-back and classy environment. Fridays and Saturday for a bigger, more energetic crowd.
Chateau Marmont (8221 Sunset Boulevard) is just a couple steps away for a great outdoor garden dinner and an A-list crowd.
