Sound. Literally.

I’m sure you remember those wind-up-chattering-teeth toys that hop up and down rapidly and make that super fast clicking noise. Now imagine that being you for a night. The Funktion One Sound system here pumps out sound that you can LITERALLY feel coming through the floor. Expect your ears to be ringing until the next day (I mean, you could wear earplugs but I’d say the ringing is a reminder from the party Gods that you made the right choice not to). The design and the theme of the club couldn’t be a more harmonious pair. The design: an abandoned industrial train yard with a cozy ambience. The theme: an underground gathering that you crawled under a chain-link fence to find because you were drawn to the music. Once you make it past the first bar you’ll see the sizeable dance floor off to your right. Atop my favorite features here are the scrims acting as transparent walls surrounding the dance floor. These scrims double as backgrounds for visual projections AND, upon closer inspection, cages for go-go dancers in really cool and edgy costumes. Also, along the entire back wall, behind the DJ booth, there is an LED wall of lights to while you rage in front of the booth. The team at Muse Lifestyle Group (which also owns Playhouse and Calle Tacos) did a great job of sticking to the underground theme by booking talent such as Lee Burridge, Steve Lawler, and Nicole Moudaber who all have enough of a following to pack the club, but maintain the underground cool to make you feel like you've discovered them yourself. On some nights, conversely, they'll book huge names like Kaskade. But even then, you'll party through the night like you stumbled upon the hidden bash you never knew existed.

Actually, though. The sound system in this place is unbelievable. This nightclub recently opened in late 2012, and I've been going back ever since I first visited to see my favorite DJ, Kaskade, for his post-Grammy show. It's a small venue, but that's what makes it so great. Besides the unbelievable bass and sound, the venue has great lighting. Its small size contributes to the overall intimate feel; it really feels like you're in a true, deep house nightclub. It houses some of the best and well-known DJs, like Kaskade and Afrojack (which I've both watched there), and even better, lots of underground, deep house DJs (Guy Gerber, Seth Troxler, etc.) Drinks are pricey, but then again it is Hollywood. Nothing out of the ordinary when compared to other clubs in the city. The crowd varies night to night. When I went to see Kaskade, for example, the majority of people were A-listers, models, and music industry people at their respective tables. On most nights, however, there are many true house fans and music lovers. One of my favorite parts of this club is the mini-cafe by the entrance/exit. On your way, I highly recommend you stop by for a midnight snack. The food is delicious, and fairly prices. They have snacks like sweet potato tater-tots (my favorite), Cuban sandwiches, and pigs in a blanket. Overall, one of my favorite clubs in LA! Great feel, crowd, sound, and food.
Sound NightClub- A Real Sound System

My Advice/My Take: Sound Nightclub is one of the newest and hottest nightclubs in Hollywood. After opening a few months ago, it has been THE club to go see good underground DJs. The venue has a raw and industrial look with lots of California redwood furniture and walls and offers a fairly spacious dance floor located right in front of the DJs perch. As suggested in the name, the venue boasts an impeccable sound system and a killer A/V system so the visual elements are as stimulating as the audio portion. This is a great new place to go in Hollywood that actually books talents who play good deep house and more minimal/artful electro rather than your typical top 40 hits and popular house music bangers. Need to know/Tip/Insider Info: On nights when popular DJ’s are playing, it is recommended that you get pre-sale tickets as gaining entrance into the club is not guaranteed and you will probably experience long waits. Who’s Hanging Here/ What’s the Vibe: Sound nightclub has been booking a lot of popular deep house DJs (Guy Gerber, Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler etc.) so the club usually attracts quite the eclectic crowd. Avid house fans are sure to flock to this club and hipster Hollywood A-Listers as well. Cocktails & Cuisine: The drinks are that of any other nightclub in Hollywood- nothing out of the ordinary and prices are reasonable to the higher-end. Sound serves hand-held street food-inspired offerings that patrons can order via table service or from one of the three bars located in the club. What to Wear: You don’t have to wear anything-super fancy but the attire usually consists of hipster-chic. What Does it Cost: Expect to pay for drinks that are priced towards the higher-end. When to go: The best time to go is on the weekends. Friday and Saturday nights are when they bring in their featured house DJ and it is sure to be crowded!
