Party Earth Review A hole-in-the-wall joint seemingly plucked from the streets of Cairo, Ali Mama Cafe is a grungy dive where the only thing stronger than the hookah tobacco might be the pots of authentic Turkish coffee. Hookah Bars in Los Angeles have become all the rage. More and more people are trading in their typical evening beer for a relaxing puff on some flavored tobacco.
Stressed-out UCLA coeds flock to hookah bars in Westwood. At Gypsy Café, patrons come for the wide variety of tobacco flavors and order the tomato soup that locals rave about. On the same block just across the street is the pricier Habibi Café, though thrifty students swear by the tobacco, food, and prices at Gypsy Café.
Koreatown hookah bars are another popular destination for fans of narghiles, but draw a slightly older crowd than Westwood’s haunts. A top pick is Aio Coffee, which has trendy interior décor, burgundy velvet sofas, and dimmed lighting. There’s also Antique Café, with a roomy patio where one can puff outdoors. If neither of those hookah joints sound right, Boba Bear is close by and open until 4am on Fridays and Saturdays, and 1am all other nights.
Of course, hookah bars are popping up in all corners of Los Angeles, from Santa Monica to Silver Lake, and Hollywood in between.
