Home base since 1947 for some of the best college memories no one ever remembers, 901 Bar & Grill is a mecca for USC Trojan fans and anybody reveling in the madness of nearby Greek Row.
With its bare concrete floors and walls adorned with local sports jerseys, USC banners, and long rows of flat-screens, the “9-0” offers all the trappings of a typical sports dive, right down to a simple menu heavy on jalapeño poppers and chicken nachos.
A typical day finds a mix of young and old patrons slinging domestic pints at the bar that lines one side of the room, or huddling around the elevated wooden tables that dot the center, to enjoy the daily Happy Hour’s 2-for-1 drinks from 4 to 9pm.
Minus a big game – when the place is invariably a madhouse – it’s actually rather chill.
But at night, especially Thursdays through Saturdays, visitors can expect a true college atmosphere, complete with sweaty, drunk USC kids, scantily clad girls enjoying a flavored vodka or…five, and blisteringly loud music pulsating over dance-happy throngs as testosterone-driven alphas work their tightest game in an attempt for another 9-0 one-night-stand.
Either to chill out and ease work/exam blues with pizza and a Miller or get hammered and rage after a Trojan victory (or just because it’s a Thursday), the 901 Bar & Grill welcomes all.
Except UCLA Bruins.
Show your USC student/faculty ID and get 25% off food and drinks from 11am to 4pm any day except Sunday. The discount is also applied to delivery hours (11am–10pm) if you’re hankering for some corn flake-crusted chicken fingers at home. Don’t have a USC ID? Then go on Fridays for the ridiculously awful karaoke and the $5 surprise drink-of-the-week special.
Tons of USC students, frat guys, sorority girls pushing their alky limits, die-hard Trojan followers who’ll start arguing against sanctions by the end of the pitcher, downtown young professionals blowing off steam, older sports fans in the mix during big game days, early 20s to late 40s.
DJs spin mostly mainstream hits on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Loud Top 40 on the sound system most other nights. Karaoke on Fridays from 11pm.
Several flat-screens tuned to sports with a keen emphasis on all things USC.
Traditional American bar food menu including nachos, wings, burgers, and pizza. Happy Hour daily 4–9pm except home game days. $5 drink specials follow Happy Hour nightly.
Appetizers $5–$10, entrées $7–$10+. Beer $5–$6, cocktails $7+.
Casual: plain t-shirts, jeans, jerseys, some business attire by day, transitioning to a mix of tank tops, USC attire, button-downs, more jerseys, short dresses, midriff-baring tops.
Any day for Happy Hour, any time a USC game is on, or Thursday through Saturday nights for the largest display of college debauchery – though that can ensue pretty much any night.
Traditions (3607 Trousdale Parkway) is another sports dive that happens to be on USC’s campus, and that promises live music and even more college kids.
