Fulham, London –
Although it looks like just another quaint neighborhood pub, The Harwood Arms has become a destination for fine dining – and the owners have the Michelin star to prove it.
Hidden away in the residential zone of Fulham, the surprisingly large space is decorated with gentle splashes of white and sage on the walls, an understated bar planted to the side, and cushioned benches and funky, rustic oak tables that wouldn’t look out of place in a hipster café in Dalston.
The culinary experience, not the furnishings, is the major selling point, with a menu leaning toward seasonal game specialties and a commitment to British countryside treats – from the cured fillet beef and rabbit shoulder starters to entrées like fallow deer and North Yorkshire grouse.
The clientele varies widely, with dapper city slickers next to young upmarket tourists and savvy foodies of all sorts, many of whom heard of the venue via word-of-mouth and were unable to resist the incessant ravings over the traditional Scotch eggs and brown sugar doughnuts (stuffed with sour cream!) alone.
Cozy fireplaces and a solid international wine list add to the pub’s appeal as a date spot, especially since the vibe is inherently relaxed, save perhaps for the playful rowdiness of Tuesday’s once-a-month quiz night.
A decadent pub that still values local traditions, The Harwood Arms is an unpretentious eatery of the finest standard.
The venison on your plate didn’t come from the farm. Read Harwood’s fascinating account on their website about the deer hunts involved in bringing this savory dish to the menu.

Cock Tavern (360 North End Road) is a popular contemporary watering hole with a dash of retro flare – including vintage posters and telephones in some of the booths to dial in a drink order – and offers a collection of small plates to go with its array of craft beers.
