An eye-catching wine menu, chic interior, and expansive beer garden – complete with a giant version of lawn Jenga – combine to make The Eagle a local favorite for a well-heeled but unpretentious crowd.
Part of the Geronimo brand, which runs thirty-odd pubs in London, the venue includes a modern main dining area featuring mismatched lampshades, rough-hewn tables, high ceilings, and a few large vases behind the clean and narrow bar.
Although regularly busy, the bar’s expansive layout provides plenty of room for casual drinkers, whether they’re nestled along one of the flower-patterned banquettes on a quiet date, reading the paper on a sleek leather couch in the library room, or joining their office mates getting rowdy at one of the larger communal tables.
Entrepreneurial hotshots drop in to savor a few craft pints and catch a rugby match on the pair of TVs, while choosy winos take advantage of the curated – and surprisingly budget-friendly – collection of wines. The biggest draw, though, is the immaculate garden, which features a similarly sparse and contemporary design and overflows with festive friends on sunny days.
Regular theme nights from retro parties on Fridays to live music on Thursdays and quiz nights on Sundays all round out the offerings at The Eagle, which, despite being part of a chain, has a unique character all its own.
Young professionals, outdoor drinking fans, casual rugby followers, couples on dates, groups of office mates, some families, 20s to late 30s.
Live acoustic on Thursdays from 8pm, retro parties on Fridays from 7pm, and quiz nights on Sundays from 6:30pm.
Barely audible ambient music. Music amps up after 6pm, but never loud enough to kill conversations.
Pair of TVs often tuned to rugby matches.
Lawn-sized Jenga game in the garden.
Small menu of traditional and seasonal British grub that trends upscale, including Portland brown crab, warm chorizo salad, black pudding, quail eggs, and slow-roasted lamb shoulder. Sunday roast noon–9pm.
Appetizers £5–£9.50, classic pub entrées £9.95–£11.50, upscale entrées £9.50–£17.50. Sunday roast £13–£16.
Beer £3.55–£5, wine £4–£9/glass or £15.50–£30+/bottle, cocktails £4–£7+, champagne £4.60–£9/glass or £25–£52/bottle.
Smart casual: suits, pinstripes, Abercrombie, button-downs, chill sweaters, basic t-shirts, fitted jeans, cute skirts.
Any sunny day to relax in the garden, Thursdays for live music or Fridays for fun 80s music and a happy crowd.
The Anglesea Arms (35 Wingate Road) is a country-style pub that attracts a young international clientele with seasonal eats, craft ales, and prices a bit friendlier to the wallet than the average watering hole in this part of town.
