The name would imply a place most dedicated students would hope to never find themselves, but The Court draws in a lively young crowd of regulars thanks to the venue’s proximity to the main dorms of the University of London.
Daytime hours see the big group tables crammed with students taking a break from brain-busting midterms, as tourists make a pit stop at the long main bar, a welcome alternative to the more refined cocktail lounges and gastropubs that dominate this stretch of Tottenham Court.
Partitioned nooks toward the back of the open room provide a bit of privacy for couples looking to enjoy their cheap tap beers away from the frat-like atmosphere, while young professionals unwind around the pool tables and arcade games, pump money into the jukeboxes, or – when there’s a sporting event – join the rest of the rowdy fans around one of the flat-screens.
Outside, five large picnic tables accommodate the overflow on warm evenings, and each are comfortably equipped with heating lamps for those London nights when a warm beer just isn’t enough.
With affordable burgers and pints mixed in with an outgoing party crowd, The Court’s laid-back, no-frills approach makes it easy for patrons to pass judgment on a fun night.
Local and study abroad university students, sports fans, and young professionals, early 20s to late 30s.
Mix of classic rock and American and British pop songs on the pair of jukeboxes.
Quiz nights on Sundays (patrons must sign up by 8pm). Two pool tables and arcade games. Flat-screen TVs mostly tuned to sports.
Full menu of breakfast items, appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, fish and chips, and vegetarian dishes.
Breakfast £4+, appetizers £2.50+, salads £4.50+, fish and chips £3.50. Beer £3.50+, shots £1.70+.
Casual: Anything goes.
The bar draws a good crowd from Mondays through Thursdays around 9pm.
Spearmint Rhino (161 Tottenham Court Road) offers study breaks in the form of lap dances, a good way to take pressure off of school work.
