London Cinco de Mayo Overview

People confuse Cinco de Mayo as a celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day, but that actually takes place in September. Cinco de Mayo was first celebrated during the American Civil War by a group of Mexican-Americans and Latinos who wanted to dedicate the day to Mexican culture and heritage.

Over the years, Cinco de Mayo has become one of the rowdiest holidays on the American calendar, spanning far beyond the country’s Mexican and Latino populations. However, America’s friends across the pond throw a mean mariachi bash at Cinco de Mayo London 2018.

London might not be the obvious choice for Cinco de Mayo celebrations, but it’s one of the best kept secrets come May 5th. Londoners head to Mexican restaurants like Los Locos in Covent Garden. There, hungry hombres and mujeres chow down on traditional Mexican cuisine up until 11pm, when the restaurant transforms into a wild club packed with easygoing young patrons.

Cinco de Mayo parties pop up all around London at Mexican-influenced establishments like Alphabet Bar, Cargo, and Navajo Joe. Young and old locals alike take the opportunity to sip on margaritas and listen to Mexican music wherever they can, enjoying Cinco de Mayo events hours before their American counterparts.

The Atlantic Ocean may separate London from North America, but margaritas still taste the same. Come Cinco de Mayo, don’t count out the UK’s biggest city.
