Calling Festival Description

Calling Festival - Music Festival in London.

Taking a jog in the hot, unforgiving summer sun is impossible without two things: a full water bottle and an eclectic rock and roll playlist on your iPod that’ll keep your morale up and your legs churning.

Imagine if all the artists responsible for the sweet songs on your summer jogging playlist came together for one weekend of shows in London. That would be a dream come true, right?

The Calling Festival (previously known as Hard Rock Calling) has been making dreams come true since its inception in 2006. Everyone from The Who to Eric Clapton to The Killers have taken the stage and played to adoring audiences at the event sponsored by Hard Rock Café and Live Nation.

Calling Festival is an old-fashioned, no-frills good time, where respectful but fun-loving crowds have the freedom to wander from stage to stage and are encouraged to grab a partner and dance.

Over the years, the Calling Festival has become a major destination for Londoners and worldwide rock and roll fans alike. Audiences flock to the Calling Festival in hopes of seeing a performance like the one where Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney teamed up for “Twist and Shout” in 2012 and were cut short because of an old but strict London curfew.

Hard Rock Calling takes over Hyde Park for a weekend every summer and always seems to put together an amazing and diverse lineup of equal parts established, up-and-coming, and legacy acts across multiple genres. They do a particularly good job at booking lesser known artists on the cusp of breaking out. I went in 2010, when Pearl Jam, Stevie Wonder, and Paul McCartney headlined a lineup that included The Hives, Ben Harper, Michael Kiwanuka, Beach House, The Gaslight Anthem, Elvis Costello, and Crosby, Stills, & Nash. The sound quality was good for temporary outdoor stages, and the main stage featured big screens at each side of the stage and about halfway back in the crowd to help those farther back to see the action on stage. The England-Germany World Cup match was going on during the festival on Sunday and was even shown on one of the screens for those not wanting to miss it. The crowd was among the most lively and energetic that I’ve ever seen, especially during a particularly manic Pearl Jam set. One drawback to being in Hyde Park is that there is a noise curfew that has cut sets short in the past, however a benefit of the location is that you can picnic in the park and listen to the main stage performances even if you don’t have a ticket to get into the festival grounds.
